Book excerpt: 'A Handful of Marbles' is a collection of twelve stories that takes readers down the nostalgia lane to what childhood used to be, much before the whole world and its kids went digital. The stories revolve around Pushkar, a nine-year-old precocious boy with a mind of his own. The readers get a ringside view of his life sprinkled with happiness, tears, conflicts, collaborations, love, bonhomie, fears, fantasies, aspirations, arrogance, anger, and more. Be it fighting his guilt conscience after unfairly winning a marble match, his ambition to be a manjha ninja, his encounter with ghouls, his confrontation with the Sarkar gang, obsession with Bruce Lee, his dilemma choosing between Lord Krishna and Jesus, his comic book adventure, his unusual acting debut in a film or infatuation for Twinkle Miss, the stories tend to be endearing, humourous and sometimes, plain baffling. Whatever the outcome, they will leave the readers smiling, thinking, and rooting for Pushkar.

Book excerpt: Refusing to give up their ancestral land and be driven into the newly established reservation, several Nez Perce bands led by Chief Joseph, White Bird, and Looking Glass embarked on a fighting retreat covering four states: Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana, with an attempt to reach safety in Canada. Along the way the native warriors outwitted the U.S. Cavalry again and again, but eventually surrendered some 40 miles from the Canadian border where Chief Joseph made his famous "I will fight no more forever" speech. About 750 men, women, children, and elderly set out on the march; over 100 died in battles and extreme hardship. Based on historical facts mostly the story was told through the eyes of a fictitious nine-year-old white girl, Opal, who befriends the Nez Perce and goes through the war with them. the oppression of the Native Americans was one of the darkest pages in the U.S. history, yet the spirit of these proud people could never be destroyed even in the face of death and exile and material impoverishment. Also the spirit of reconciliation prevailed as the peacemaker Chief Joseph eloquently summed up: Whenever the white man treats the Indians as they treat each other, then we shall have no more wars. We shall be all alike - brothers of one father and one mother, with one sky above us and one country around us, and one government for us all. Then the Great Spirit Chief who rules above will smile upon this land, and send rain to wash out the bloody spots made by brothers' hands upon the face of the earth. for this time Indian race is waiting and praying. I hope that no more groans of wounded men and women will ever go to the ear of the Great Spirit Chief above, and that all people may be one people.

Diego DeLorean, who was one of the wealthiest men in the United States, begins his journey from El Paso, Texas, all the way to the archeological sites in the grand state of Yucatan, Mexico, to get answers to his many questions. Ever since he was a young boy living in the jungles surrounding the mystical pyramids, he always wondered about their existence as well as his own origins. After losing his mother, his father, and his little brother to a ferocious plague, he miraculously found his way to Juarez, Mexico, which borders El Paso, Texas. There he was adopted by the DeLoreans. In June of 2012, he loses his entire family once again in a horrific airplane crash. In his devastation, he attempts to take his own life, but through a divine intervention, his attempt is futile, and instead he is inspired to find answers to questions that have haunted him all his life. He discovers who he truly is and where he comes from. These discoveries lead him to yet another journey that will forever change him and the world as we know it. 1

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mentalizing in Child Therapy focuses on open-ended psychotherapy for children with complex mental health issues and attachment problems. It offers examples of personalized and integrated treatment that is "firm in structure yet flexible in its focus" (Peter Fonagy, foreword to first edition). The book is based on the systematic observation of the treatment of complex problems in children (4-12 years) using a mentalizing therapeutic stance and a range of techniques to enhance mentalizing abilities and trust in other people, incorporating aspects of the more relationship-oriented and competence-oriented treatments. In this updated edition, the authors have elaborated on the topic of attention regulation, having included Siegel’s concept of the ‘window of tolerance’. They’ve also written more on the mentalizing abilities of the therapist, the importance of providing structure at the beginning of the treatment, and the value of communication for developing epistemic trust. Featuring guidelines for clinical practitioners, this book is important for the clinical training of child psychotherapists, as well as for professional child psychiatrists, child psychologists and other therapists working with four to 12-year-old children experiencing significant developmental problems with mentalizing.
