Book excerpt: ‘A Corrupt Tree’ is a unique, extensively researched, four volume exposé of the dark side of the Church of Rome. It reveals that for nearly two thousand years the Church’s fundamental characteristic has been its self-serving abuse of religio-corporate power. A large proportion of this first volume provides a detailed catalogue of the multitude of unholy popes. Included, are those who were immature, capricious, corrupt, lascivious, fanatical, senile, truly mad, megalomanic, tyrannical, murderous, and wholesale killers. It confirms that for many, many centuries the popes were corrupt, cruel, inhumane, and despotic. In an age of savagery they were the leaders in barbarity; in the subsequent age of enlightenment they have persistently resisted the march of progress. Additionally, the popes were wholesale killers who ‘made the principle of assassination a law of the Christian Church.’ Accordingly, the Church ‘has shed more innocent blood than any other institution that has ever existed among mankind.’ Here also are presented the cupidity, corruption, and sexual misconducts of lesser ecclesiastics, including cardinals, bishops, priests, monks and nuns. Pope Honorius III, for example, described his priests as ‘worse than beasts wallowing in their dung.’ The Church’s ruthless stranglehold on knowledge and learning is catalogued in detail. Mathematics, philosophy and science were repressed. Selected, applied theology ruled the world. ‘Everything was explained, but nothing was understood.’ The chapters on censorship reveal that even works of considerable literary or philosophical merit did not escape. A large number of writings which eventually became classics of European culture were condemned and prohibited. The Church also exhibited a vitriolic hatred of those who translated the Bible into the vernacular. Many of these men were annihilated. Holy books were burned in large numbers ‒ particularly the Jewish Talmud. It is clearly demonstrated that the Church held back civilisation for over fifteen hundred years. ‘Century after century passed away, and left the peasantry but little better than the cattle in the fields.’ Finally, the unholy behaviours of the numerous popes, cardinals, and lesser ecclesiastics are shown to establish, unequivocally, that the Church of Rome is neither holy nor apostolic. The ultimate message of these volumes is that to become an exemplary institution, and to play a truly humane role in the world’s future, the Catholic Church must change.

Book excerpt: When Justin escapes the comfortable medieval estate where his overbearing father has kept him sheltered his whole life, hot in pursuit of the servant girl he has fallen in love with, he finds himself caught up in a social order torn between extremes of wealth and poverty, feudal hierarchy and peasant revolts, ecclesiastical corruption and monastic piety, gross injustices and boundless mercy. The mid-fourteenth century was a time not only of burgeoning towns, majestic cathedrals, and nascent universities, but also of debauchery and violence, the Black Death and Inquisition, torture and ordeals. In his encounters with noblemen and peasants, alchemists and hermits, monks and heretics, knights and revolutionaries, prostitutes and miscreants from the medieval underworld, Justin comes to realize that he is entirely on his own as he confronts his personal moral failings and struggles to find faith in a world where God no longer seems to exist.

Book excerpt: Inhabitable Infrastructures: Science fiction or urban future?, the follow up to Food City and Smartcities and Eco-Warriors, from one of the world’s leading urban design and architectural thinkers, explores the potential of climate change-related multi-use infrastructures that address the fundamental human requirements to protect, to provide and to participate. The stimulus for the infrastructures derives from postulated scenarios and processes gleaned from science fiction and futurology as well as the current body of scientific knowledge regarding changing environmental impacts on cities. Science fiction is interdisciplinary by nature, aggregates the past and present, and evaluates both lay opinions and professional strategies in an attempt to develop foresight and to map possible futures. The research culminates in the creation of innovative multi-use infrastructures and integrated self-sustaining support systems that meet the challenges posed through climate change and overpopulation, and the reciprocal benefits of simultaneously addressing the threat and the shaping of cities. J. G. Ballard has written that the psychological realm of science fiction is most valuable in its predictive function, and in projecting emotions into the future. The knowledge from the book is widely transferable, constituting both solutions and speculative visions of future urban environments. The book is indispensable reading for professionals and students in the fields of urban design, architecture, engineering and environmental socio-politics.

Book excerpt: Shocked to find corruption widespread in the ranks of their shepherds today, too many good Catholics are tempted to leave the Church, unaware that ever since the days when Jesus' own treasurer, Judas Iscariot, had his hand in the till, the Good Shepherd and His faithful followers have been regularly betrayed by bad shepherds. In these eye-opening pages, Church historian Rod Bennett introduces a number of those bad shepherds, including Bishop Eusebius of Nicomedia, who regularly sold out the Church to the Roman emperor; Pope Stephen VII, who so hated his late predecessor that he had him dug up, put on trial, and flung into the Tiber; Benedict IX, who bought and sold the papacy (twice!); and Pope John XII, whose debauchery rivaled that of the corrupt emperor Caligula. Those were very bad shepherds indeed, but while they did the Devil’s work, good Catholics not only survived — they thrived. They outlasted their bad shepherds, preserved in their ranks the Faith of our fathers, and served in each instance as the foundation for a cleansing of the House of God and a vigorous renewal of the Faith. These enlightening pages demonstrate that it can happen again!
