Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief and Impartial History of the Life and Actions of Andrew Jackson: President of the United States It may be set down as almost a miracle, that he found no lawyer Settled in 'nashville, where he first set up his staff of rest. Consequently he was welcomed with a shower of briefs, and the very morning succeeding his arrival he issued no less than seventy writs. His presence soon became a terror to the debtors in the place, of whom the number was not small, and he was consequently involved in a great many broils, through which his native energy carried him with more credit to his courage than to his discretion. In 1789, Mr. Jackson formed an acquaintance that was to have a powerful influence on his future reputation and happiness. We would fain pass over this matter in silence, in mercy to him, as major Eaton has done, were it consistent with the duty of a biographer. As it is, we shall merely detail the facts relating to this connexion, without comment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist and New York Times bestselling author of The First American comes the first major single-volume biography in a decade of the president who defined American democracy • "A big, rich biography.” —The Boston Globe H. W. Brands reshapes our understanding of this fascinating man, and of the Age of Democracy that he ushered in. An orphan at a young age and without formal education or the family lineage of the Founding Fathers, Jackson showed that the presidency was not the exclusive province of the wealthy and the well-born but could truly be held by a man of the people. On a majestic, sweeping scale Brands re-creates Jackson’s rise from his hardscrabble roots to his days as frontier lawyer, then on to his heroic victory in the Battle of New Orleans, and finally to the White House. Capturing Jackson’s outsized life and deep impact on American history, Brands also explores his controversial actions, from his unapologetic expansionism to the disgraceful Trail of Tears. Look for H.W. Brands's other biographies: THE FIRST AMERICAN (Benjamin Franklin), THE MAN WHO SAVED THE UNION (Ulysses S. Grant), TRAITOR TO HIS CLASS (Franklin Roosevelt) and REAGAN.

Book excerpt: Keen to learn but short on time? Get to grips with the life and career of Andrew Jackson in next to no time with this concise guide. 50Minutes.com provides a clear and engaging analysis of the life, times and career of Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States. Described by the French historian Alexis de Tocqueville as "a man of violent disposition and mediocre ability" who wholly lacked "the necessary qualities to govern a free nation", Jackson nonetheless enjoyed great popular support and still graces the American $20 bill. How can this startling discrepancy be explained? This guide provides a balanced evaluation of Jackson's presidency, considering both his successes, such as his role in strengthening democracy and political participation in the USA, and his failings, namely his decision to dismantle the country's national bank and his complicity in the appalling mistreatment of Native Americans in the Southern states. In just 50 minutes you will: - Learn about Jackson's early life and his decisive role in the War of 1812 between Britain and the USA - Understand his political beliefs, his main actions as president and their impact on American politics - Discover the numerous criticisms that have been levelled at him by modern historians ABOUT 50MINUTES.COM History & Culture 50MINUTES.COM will enable you to quickly understand the main events, people, conflicts and discoveries from world history that have shaped the world we live in today.
