Book excerpt: The world is in the midst of a poaching and illegal wildlife trade (IWT) crisis which threatens survival of many species. Poaching and IWT involves a wide range of species and has been estimated by different sources to be worth USD 7–23 Billion annually. Poaching and associated IWT are devastating populations of iconic wildlife species such as rhinos and elephants, as well as a host of lesser known ones. Botswana has enhanced its law enforcement efforts to combat poaching and IWT. The key enforcement institution is the DWNP which works closely with the Botswana Police Service (BPS) and the Botswana Defence Force (BDF). According to the DWNP, illegal off‐take has not yet become a serious threat to wildlife populations in Botswana. Statistics show that even though poaching might have led to a decline in the population of some wildlife species, some species like the elephant and the rhino have not recorded any decline. The elephant population in Botswana is estimated at approximately 200,000 which is quite impressive. Rhinos in Botswana are also experiencing an increase in numbers. The population of the southern white rhino has increased from a count of 26 in 2005 to 153 in 2014. The most targeted species for poaching and IWT in Botswana is the elephant and therefore the major focus of Botswana’s efforts to combat wildlife crime is on elephants. The year 2012 recorded the highest poaching numbers of wildlife in Botswana. The number of elephants poached rose from 22 in 2009 to 163 in 2012 and then dropped to only 4 in 2013. The number of lions poached remained very low although there was a rise from 0 in 2009 to 3 in 2013. No white rhino was poached from 2009 to 2012 and only one was poached in 2013.

Book excerpt: Ever since the publication of Placide Tempel's epoch-making work Bantu Philosophy, African philosophers have worked to dispel the myth that there is no metaphysics in Africa. In the East African context we remember the names of Joseph Nyasmi and Odera Oruka, and in the West African context, Pauline Hotoundji and Kwesi Wiredu have made monumental contributions to elucidate African metaphysics. This compendium, presented by a group of scholars from the University of Botswana, seeks to build bridges between the seemingly estranged disciplines of African metaphysics, existential philosophy, and economics in the contexts of HIV/AIDS.

Is there hope against the politics of the belly, kleptocracies, vampire states, failed states, and Afro-pessimism? In Reasonable Radicals and Citizenship in Botswana, Richard Werbner examines a rare breed of powerful political elites who are not tyrants, torturers, or thieves. Werbner's focus is on the Kalanga, a minority ethnic group that has served Botswana in business and government since independence. Kalanga elites have expanded public services, advocated causes for the public good, founded organizations to build the public sphere and civil society, and forged partnerships and alliances with other ethnic groups in Botswana. Gathering evidence from presidential commissions, land tribunals, landmark court cases, and his lifetime relationship with key Kalanga elites, Werbner shows how a critical press, cosmopolitanism, entrepreneurship, accountability, and the values of patriarchy and elderhood make for an open society with strong, capable government. Werbner's work provides a refreshing alternative to those who envision no future for Africa beyond persistent agony and lack of development.

This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we measure African economic performance? This volume studies how growth is measured in Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia and challenges commonly held beliefs of African economic performance. The volume offers a reconsideration of economic growth in Africa in three respects. First, it shows that the focus has been on average economic growth and that there has been no failure of economic growth. In particular the gains made in the 1960s and 1970s have been neglected. Second, it emphasizes that for many countries the decline in economic growth in the 1980s was overstated, as was the improvement in economic growth in the 1990s. The coverage of economic activities in GDP measures is incomplete. In the 1980s many economic activities were increasingly missed in the official records thus the decline in the 1980s was overestimated (resulting from declining coverage) and the increase in the 1990s was overestimated (resulting from increasing coverage). The third important reconsideration is that there is no clear association between economic growth and orthodox economic policies. This is counter to the mainstream interpretation, and suggests that the importance of sound economic policies has been overstated, and that the importance of the external economic conditions have been understated in the prevailing explanation of African economic performance.
