Book excerpt: Delve into the mind of Critical Role's most charming villain in this original novel that chronicles Lucien's early life and his fateful meeting with the Mighty Nein. Lucien has always been able to spin a bad situation to his advantage. From his childhood on the dangerous streets of Shadycreek Run to his years living off the grid and learning blood magic from the Claret Orders, the charismatic blood hunter will find a way to get the upper hand. When Lucien is on a job in the frozen wastelands of Eiselcross with his fellow mercenaries, a rough-and-tumble crew called the Tombtakers, fate leads him to a mysterious journal in the ruins of an ancient city. The book speaks of the Somnovem, nine beings who can grant Lucien power beyond imagining-if he is able to find them and free them from captivity. Intrigued by this opportunity, Lucien pores over the journal-but the more he reads, the stranger things become. The nine whisper to him in dreams and waking visions. Time slips away, along with Lucien's grasp on reality. And tattoos of red eyes begin appearing on his skin. . . . With the ability to reshape the world within his grasp, Lucien ignores all warning signs. He has always bent fortune to his will, and nothing-not even death-will stop him now. Written by New York Times bestselling author Madeleine Roux, Critical Role: The Mighty Nein-The Nine Eyes of Lucien explores the meteoric rise and fall of one of Critical Role's most notorious and tragic figures.

Unlike her childhood, it’s safe. Predictable. And her husband and son love her almost as fiercely as she loves them. But Veth’s cozy existence is turned on its head when she and her family are captured by raiders. In order to save them, Veth will commit an atrocity that will sever her from all that she loves––maybe forever––and lead her to become Nott the Brave of the Mighty Nein. Celebrated writer Sam Maggs (Captain Marvel, The Unstoppable Wasp) is joined by Critical Role cast members Matthew Mercer and Sam Riegel, with the expert art of William Kirkby (Rat Queens) and colors by Eren Angliolini (Justice League: Last Ride), with letters from Ariana Maher (Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins) for a heartbreaking look at a halfling’s end and a goblin’s beginning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do some leaders succeed and others fail? Is there a magic ingredient that the leaders must consider in their career journey to ensure the joy ride does not turn into a nightmare? What is the key to maximizing leaders' success in ways that are sustainable long term? The purpose of this book is to provide a simple road map for leaders, aspiring leaders, students, and anyone interested in the art of leadership to succeed in high-risk environments. Often, leaders don’t know what they don’t know. One main culprit is the lack of assessing, measuring, analyzing, and addressing risk. Simply put, we don’t know what we don’t measure. What is not known can and will eventually harm leaders, organizations, and their customers. Change is the new normal and only constant. As change grows, so does risk. Risk can be a friend or foe to thought leaders. It all depends on perspective, insight, and knowledge. Ignorance is never bliss, and leaders must leverage knowledge to mitigate risks at every turn. In The 10 Cardinal Sins of Leadership: What Thought Leaders Must Never Do to Succeed in High-Risk Environments, readers will learn: How to identify, measure, analyze, and address various types of risk How to determine if risk is a friend or a foe Strategic planning concepts that will allow leaders to magnify, plan for, leverage, and marginalize risks long term Methods to ensure that inclusion efforts do not become overly exclusive, thus excluding key stakeholders and creating new levels of organizational risk Techniques for looking back at organizational yesteryears to create a high-performing journey map for the road ahead The value of perspective – how we view things determines how we respond or wait to be disrupted unknowingly

Book excerpt: The principal role of the respiratory system is to permit ef? cient exchange of respiratory gases (O and CO ) with the environment. The respiratory system is unique in that it is constantly 2 2 exposed to a barrage of foreign substances from both the internal environment (at any one point in time, approximately one-half of the cardiac output is received by the lungs) and the external environment (with each breath, the respiratory tract is exposed to pollens, viruses, bacteria, smoke, etc). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, diseases of the res- ratory system were the seventh and eighth leading causes of deaths in children aged 1 to 19 years in 2003 [1]. Dr. George A. Gregory, one of the founding fathers of pediatric critical care me- cine, once estimated that acute respiratory failure accounts for nearly 50% of all admissions to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) [2]. Just as important are the many diseases that affect the respiratory system that are not associated with acute respiratory failure, but nevertheless constitute a major portion of the practice of pediatric critical care medicine, some of which account for signi? cant morbidity and mortality [3]. Once again, we would like to dedicate this textbook to our families and to the physicians and nurses who provide steadfast care every day in pediatric intensive care units across the globe. Derek S.
